Optical Fiber Connection in Japan
In Japan, optical fiber Internet service is most popular, and provided with reasonable prices even compared to other broadband services such as ADSL and CATV. You need to choose a good ISP to fulfill your needs.
You will need to understand that your basic needs are very different from the one of typical Japanese, because you, yourself, will access contents in overseas, and Japanese will access domestic/local content, especially continuous HD video streaming such as sling box (from overseas). This is not popular in Japan and your bandwidth can be throttled easily. If this is the case, you are in the same situation as staying with a slower network such as ADSL. We are ready to help you to choose the best option for you!

FAQ – Broadband Internet Services
Why do I need to have a network service and an ISP separately?

Unlike most countries, there are 2 independent functions necessary for an Internet connection in Japan. These are “Network Service” and “Internet Service Provider”. In Japan, NTT owns most of the telecommunication facilities, and is prohibited by law to run an ISP service themselves. NTT provides only the “Network Service” named “FLET’S”. The function of the ISP is to connect you to the network service.
Why do you recommend SonixNet as your ISP?

SonixNet provide you with native English support, competitive pricing and excellent services. All documents are provided in English. Additionally, other ISPs shape your speeds, even your downloading bandwidth usage if used excessively, SonixNet does not (this is important if you use HD video streaming such as sling box). You can ask other ISPs if they can promise to provide you with enough bandwidth allowing 2-3 Mbps continuous HD streaming from overseas, and if they won’t shape your bandwidth even if used in that way, SonixNet can promise you with this.
SonixNet optimize your bandwidth through the global network of NTT Group (the best in Japan) recognizing that domestic needs (mostly enjoy domestic contents) and expat community needs (mostly require contents from overseas), they are very different. For more details of SonixNet, you can check a different section of this website (click here).

What are the variations with NTT Flet’s Hikari (Optical Fiber) service?

There are several technical standards for NTT FLET’S Optical Fiber service such as “VDSL” and “LAN” and “Optical Fiber Wiring”. The service available to you is dependent on NTT (network service). Optical fiber will be connected to the main distribution unit in your apartment, and then there are 3 types of wiring methods to each flat dependent on the structure of your apartment.
VDSL -- Telephone line based (Download 100M and upload 35M & Rental Modem 350yen/month)
LAN -- LAN cable based (Download and upload 100M & No rental modem needed)
Optical Fiber --- Optical Fiber wiring based (Download and upload 100M & Rental Modem 900yen/month)
-Monthly fees listed below depend on the number of units in your building (Apartment Type only).
Mini (3,500yen / Apartment buildings with 6-9 units)
Plan 1 (2,800yen / Apartment buildings with more than 10 units & less than 16 users)
Plan 2 (2,500yen / Apartment buildings with more than 10 units & more than 16 users)
What is “Shared Internet System”?

Your apartment may be pre-installed with an “Apartment Internet System. This system is similar to those in hotels. It is managed by your apartment and the Internet connection is shared among tenants. Most of these are based on optical fiber connection though, since it is shared by many people, the connection speed will not be as fast & stable as an independent Optical Fiber (Flet’s Hikari). You may have a problem if you use video streaming system such as sling box that will require stable & fast bandwidth. Please note that this is different from NTT’s B FLET’S Apartment Type Service.

Telephone Line in Japan
There are two types of telephone line services in Japan (provided by NTT). One is standard analog phone line service (traditional one), and another one is IP phone service (named Hikari Denwa) based on NTT’s Flet’s Hikari optical fiber service. You can expect the same type of phone numbers such as 03-XXXX-XXXX. On condition that you have Flet’s Hikari optical fiber service, you can expect lower monthly fee and calling rate compared to standard analog phone service.
Please be informed that you will need to check with your security company (SECOM etc.) if your residential security system is installed for analog phone system or IP phone system.
As for International calling discount service, we have many variations and please feel free to contact us anytime.
